Original Odhner – Mechanical Calculator (ca. 1950s–1960s)

All-metal precision device – reliable Swedish engineering – an icon of computing history

This Original Odhner calculator is a classic example of the patented Odhner mechanism, one of the most important inventions in the history of mechanical arithmetic. This model was used in offices, banks, and government departments long before electronic calculators existed. Built to last for decades, you can feel that in its weight, metal components, and precise operation.

📜 History

Willgodt Theophil Odhner, a Swedish engineer, developed the famous pinwheel calculator in 1874. His design became the standard model for mechanical calculators worldwide well into the 20th century.

Original Odhner machines are among the most sought-after appliances because they:

  • be technically very reliable

  • played an important role in the evolution of computing equipment

  • be aesthetically appealing to collectors and decoration

This particular model was produced in the 1950s–1960s , when such machines were widely used for accounting and calculations in industry and commerce.

⚙️ Operation

The calculator operates entirely mechanically , without electricity. Everything runs on gears, pin wheels, and a robust crank mechanism.

How does the device work?

  1. Enter numbers
Use the sliders at the top to set the desired number per column (0–9).

  2. Perform calculation

    • With the large crank on the right you perform an addition or multiplication operation .

    • Each spin adds the set number to the result.

    • Moving the car (left/right) calculates tens, hundreds, etc.

  3. Subtraction and division
Using a reversing switch, you can perform subtraction and division using the same logic.

  4. Reading results

    • The lower counting frames show the result .

    • The second row shows the number of rotations performed (useful for multiplications).

Reset

The buttons on the front reset the counters to zero.

This operation makes the device ideal for those who love mechanical engineering , historical office equipment or decorative industrial objects.

🧭 Condition & Origin

The device you see here comes from Antwerp , as evidenced by the label on the back. The mechanism is complete and visually in beautiful, authentic condition for its age.

Its sturdy metal construction makes the device both a functional collector's item and a beautiful vintage display piece .

🎁 Perfect for

  • collectors of vintage calculators

  • enthusiasts of industrial design objects
